To deliver on the Green Deal objectives, we must strengthen multilevel cooperation and build on the experience of local governments. The Green City Accord is an excellent step in this direction. The transition will happen locally, or will not happen at all.

🎤Juan Espadas Cejas, Mayor of Seville and Chair of the ENVE Commission opened the discussion with CoR members and participants 💬
The European Green Deal is going to be the pillar above which we can build back better our cities and regions, creating new jobs, reducing our CO2 emissions, but also fighting social inequality. Today the European Committee of the Regions showed once again to be able to be a platform that can bring together different stakeholders and we will continue to work to be the bridge bounding European institutions, local and regional authorities, civil society and businesses, to build a more sustainable future.
The ARLEM award for Young Local Entrepreneurship in the Mediterranean shows how regions and cities can use rural entrepreneurship to foster sustainable development. Based on success stories from the three shores of the Mediterranean, the workshop will explore how policymakers can best address challenges to entrepreneurial development in rural areas, including the impact of the Coronavirus crisis, and foster environments in which entrepreneurs can thrive. By creating a dialogue between regions and cities, entrepreneurs and civil society, the workshop will identify good practices to support entrepreneurs in sparsely populated areas, tap into the entrepreneurial capacity of women and young people, and harness the business potential of traditional sectors.
To deliver on a green recovery, the EU must take inspiration from regions and cities, which are proving to be at the forefront in tackling environmental-related challenges, transforming the EU into a fair and prosperous society. By showcasing partners’ best practices, the workshop aims to highlight the role of regional and municipal authorities in the ecological transition, contributing to the discussion on the implementation of the Green Deal and the use of Cohesion Policy to this end.
